The robot

Why choose the R1 EDU Standard

A programmable humanoid robot at an accessible price. Not a niche product, not a laboratory prototype: a fully functional system with open SDK.

For whom

Universities, labs, development teams

Universities and degree programs in robotics or engineering, research laboratories with limited budgets, development teams seeking their first programmable humanoid robot, companies looking to explore human-robot interaction without the investment of a G1.

What you can do with it

Six direct application areas

  • Locomotion algorithm development and motion control on real bipedal hardware
  • Research on balance, fall recovery and postural control
  • Human-robot interaction and voice interaction via multimodal models
  • University robotics courses with programmable physical hardware
  • Prototyping on ROS2 with sim-to-real pipeline via NVIDIA Isaac SIM
  • POC to demonstrate humanoid automation at reduced costs

R1 EDU vs G1 EDU

Different products, different budgets

It is not a matter of better or worse - these are products for different needs. The G1 EDU is larger (132 cm), heavier (35 kg), has more computational power (100 TOPS) and costs approximately three times more. The R1 EDU is the right choice if budget is the primary constraint, if working in limited spaces, or if you want a first humanoid robot before investing more.

R1 EDU vs R1 Base

Programmable vs pre-programmed

The Base version does not support custom programming: it is a pre-programmed robot operable via remote control. The R1 EDU adds open SDK, ROS2, NVIDIA Jetson Orin and NVIDIA Isaac SIM support. If you are planning software development or research, you need the EDU version.

Frequently asked questions

Answers to the most common questions

What is the difference between R1 Base and R1 EDU Standard?

The R1 Base does not support custom programming: it is operable only via remote control with pre-programmed movements. The R1 EDU adds open SDK, ROS2, Jetson Orin and NVIDIA Isaac SIM. If you want to write code or do research, you need the EDU version.

What is the difference between R1 EDU and G1 EDU?

The G1 EDU is larger, more powerful (100 TOPS vs 40 TOPS) and costs approximately three times more. The R1 EDU is the entry point: more compact, lighter, more accessible budget. The choice depends on research requirements and available budget.

How long from order confirmation to delivery?

4–8 weeks. Exact timings confirmed at the time of order based on availability. The R1 started deliveries in April 2026.

What does the support include?

Remote support via phone and video call, remote diagnostics, on-site interventions by appointment throughout Italy, firmware updates.

Can I develop proprietary software?

Yes. The R1 EDU has an open SDK, supports ROS2, Python and NVIDIA Isaac SIM for sim-to-real workflows. Abra can support you in development if needed.
